Nature Responsible Safari

The Serengeti De-snaring Project

Brief explanation about The Serengeti De-snaring Project

Tanzania is known for its amazing diversity in wildlife and its incredible maintenance of vegetative habitats that allow the existence of millions of species; all from the eccentric elephant to the unnoticed ant lion. However, as much as the country prides itself with this aspect, Tanzania still faces a lot of challenges with poaching. This situation does not just happen to animals who hold tusks or horns, but animals who offer bushmeat.

There are so many methods used for poaching but one that is really prevalent is snaring. Snaring is a form of animal poaching that uses a steel- cable loop and works by capturing a moving animal. Usually, the snares are set for specific animals but unfortunately, it does not discriminate and ends up ruining the eco-balance of the nature.

Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), a governmental agency that is responsible for the management of the national parks in the country, decided that enough was enough. Around 2017, TANAPA collaborated with Frankfurt Zoology, a conservation organization, in order to eliminate the poaching problem. These 2 organizations worked together with Serengeti National Park management (SENAPA) and the Tanzania Tour Operation Association (TATO), which allows the association of other tour operators to give a helping hand.

Up until recently, they have managed to release more than 1000 snares and going. The program uses a lot of effective methods that allow this project to work and produce a positive outcome. For instance, they use experience teams which, include ex-poachers, to tackle the problem. Of course, working with people who have done poaching are more aware of the tactics used. Moreover, they focus on rescuing hundreds of animals caught in the snares alive. This initiative has brought about a big difference in the country at large
