Nature Responsible Safari

7 Days Wildebeest Migration 2024 Calving Season

Trip information

By late January to march perhaps the greatest spectacle of the Serengeti takes place with the wildebeest calving season. Approximately 8,000 young wildebeest are born every single day during the peak of the Serengeti calving season.

The wildebeest calving season typically occurs during the rainy season in the Serengeti ecosystem of East Africa. The exact timing of the calving season can vary slightly from year to year and depends on the availability of fresh grazing grass for the wildebeest. However, it generally takes place between the months of January and March.

During this period, hundreds of thousands of pregnant wildebeest gather in the southern Serengeti, particularly in the Ndutu area and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, to give birth to their young. The timing of the calving season is synchronized with the availability of nutrient-rich grass, which grows after the seasonal rains.
